Rich was born underneath the Spanish flag, which might explain his coy sense of humor. At the mature age of 17, Rich became part of organizations that allowed him to travel to such desolate places as Panama, Ecuador, the Galapagos, French Polynesia, Micronesia, Australia, Korea, Italy, Croatia, Germany, the UK while serving with the US military. Rich finally settled in Colorado in 1999 and has since become an avid mountaineer, an aspiring whitewater kayaker, a technical climber, a modest skier, a connoisseur of fine beer, an enthusiastic martial artist, and occasionally enjoys sitting in the dark thinking about nothing.
Rich first touched the African sky in January of 2009 while training to be a trip leader for Renaissance trips to Kilimanjaro. His thoughts - "Kilimanjaro convinced me that anybody just even attempting to climb the beautiful mountain will embark on a journey of self-discovery. It is truly magical."
