Prerequisites: Able to swim and have fun

This course introduces kids to kayaking in the fun and controlled environments of a lake and class I river. They will learn all the basic kayaking skills through the use of interactive games. They also learn a great deal about the environment that surrounds kayaking, from how rivers work to the wildlife that depends on them. The main focus is learning how to kayak while having fun and staying safe. Students will spend two days at Chatfield State Park learning how to kayak on a lake and then they will be introduced to moving water. No prior experience required.
Itinerary
Day 1
We start out with introductions and playing games to get to know each other. The students will than learn about all the gear and how it works. Than it is off to the water to learn basic skills and play games. Skills include the wet-exit, paddle strokes, and t-rescue.
Day 2
We begin by learning the importance of taking care of our environment and how we share it with many other outdoor enthusiasts. We warm up by playing some games and gearing up. Then it’s off to the water were we practice the skills already learned and begin to learn more. Skills for the day include the J-lean, bracing and the Eskimo roll. Once the students get the hang of these skills the games become really fun.

Recommended Gear List
All you need to bring is the same personal equipment as you would wear to the beach:
• Sunscreen
• Sunglasses with retention straps (Croakies, etc.
• Something to get wet in (swimsuit)
• Wetsuit booties or river sandals (Chacos, Tevas, etc.)
• A hat
• Lots of Water!!!
• Large Lunch!!!
If you have your own wetsuit, booties, underarmer, fleece or other appropriate water clothing, please bring it. If you do not we will provide a wetsuit, splash jacket and booties, but your own personal gear will likely fit best.

Important Travel Information
Destination Location
At Chatfield Reservoir, the classes meet at the gravel pond, on the south end of the park. After leaving the gate house take a right at the first stop sign. You will pass a road on your right that goes to the horse stables. The road will curve to the left and as it does you will see the gravel pond on your right. Take the next right turn on to a dirt road, follow it to a parking lot and that is the meeting location.
The reservoir has a gate fee of: $7.00 per day or you may purchase Season Pass.
